Super Moby v1.0

While driving home from Louisville I had the brilliant idea of how NOT to spend any more unnecessary money on mopeds. I still needed one to get me to classes and work, but I didn't need two. I looked at the cost analysis between the Pintomos and the Moby. The Pintomos would have at least cost me $75 to get back on the road safely. The Moby however only needed nuts and bolts, so a total of $2 to get me back on the road safely. The catch is I needed several parts off my Pintomos to make the Moby run. I got home from the 2 hour drive and made the decision to say goodbye to my Pintomos. It had served me well and I enjoyed building and riding it, but the recent cylinder issue just cost too much. I don't have the time, money, or space to maintain 2+ mopeds anymore. With graduation approaching and the job search beginning I need to focus on more important things than that extra 3mph. I began work last night on the Moby and finished up today. Here it is, the Super Moby! Still 50cc, but definitely closing in on 40mph! I will be taking it out later to test the longevity of my work. Moped Woes

Last week while riding I noticed a new sound coming from my moped. At first I didn't think much of it, but every time I hit a small bump it became louder. The sound came from below my normal view. While coming back from work the other day I spent the time to look under my moped and I'm glad I did. It appears while riding I snapped off my exhaust stud inside the cylinder. There are two studs that hold the pipe to the cylinder exhaust port. While one is still attached it's severely weakened and probably dangerous to exceed 5mph. I am in desperate need of a drill with reverse bits now, but don't have the money to get them. The Moby is currently non-running and needs a specific part ordered before I can ride it so my options are limited. If I don't get something together over the weekend I will be using my own power and pedaling my bike to classes and work. Let's hope I find something.

Winter's around the corner

Fall riding went quickly and before long I will be sliding around on ice and snow. I can't wait! I still use my moped daily for transportation whether it's for class or work. Weekly rides with the Bropeds fell apart after our Rally in AUGUST. So pretty much no rides outside of town. Dallas and Kate, the founders of the Bropeds broke up a while back and its really effected the gang. Dallas used Kate's garage for the hangout, but now he's drifting through Bloomington and Kate's onto other things. I have tried myself to get everyone together, but too few have the same passion that I have. It's a shame, but I have to admit the Bropeds have seen much better days. Now onto my bikes. I have modded my Pintomos to house a double seat which has already toted Jenn and I back and forth a few times. It's a strong daily runner and I have put hundreds of miles on it. Jenn's moped is currently resting for the Winter and will probably go into hibernation sometime this week. My dad's Tomos is running great, I was able to check it out last weekend. His Puch Magnum is also running well, though it still needs somethings to make it a torque monster. I really want to pursue the Magnum, but my budget is tight and winter is approaching. Maybe Christmas break will bring new parts/toys to the fleet. Right now between the family we have 5 mopeds, 3 currently running. Not bad, not bad....

For Sale: 1979 Columbia Open Road

I'm trying to sell both of the mopeds I got last week. I was able to get one running and the other I looked over. I have decided to sell them as a package deal. The rusty one could be a runner, but I would have to put in some time and effort that I don't have. They are posted on Craigslist. So here is a video of the running one!

Today I received two FREE mopeds from a fellow mopeder who lives near Indy. He had grown tired of them and just didn't have the time or space. He offered them to anyone down in Bloomington since he had ridden with us a few times and knew we were hard core. I was super excited when he drove down and actually dropped them off at my front door! So now I have two 1979 Columbias. They both have German made engines branded "Solo" and should be running in the near future. I'm super excited for three reasons: First, free mopeds! Second, I can fix them and possibly get more riders for our group. Thirdly, I can sell them and finally get that 37 inch LCD tv I have wanted! Man I'm totally stoked!

Summer Riding

I have 3 strong runners sitting outside my apartment. Each with their own quarks and feel. I recently upgraded both Tomos' and put a smaller carb on the Moby. Here are the specs:

Bumblebee: Stock cylinder, larger carb/intake, geared out for top speed, expansion chamber for top speed. As of right now it's not dialed in and tops out near 40mph. Still a great ped and my first project. More mods to come!

Moby: Did a small piston mod last month and I didn't notice much. I downgraded the carb to try and get some lowend back. I haven't really messed with it, but hopefully soon. Still a strong runner and a good loaner to friends for small town rides.

Red Tomos: Purchased for my Father and recently got upgraded. I tossed the old exhuast and threw on a ripper. I removed the air filter and upjetted accordingly. Now this thing is pure fun. It's a quick 30+mph and should have the power to pull my father up the driveway. I can't wait for him to ride this. I cleaned it up, installed a new seat and rear rack. The rear brakes are messed up, but nothing a small trip to Indy couldn't fix.

Full face helmet that is. I'm super excited about this one. It's a hybrid between a dirt bike and a street racer. I tested it out tonight and it was amazing. No more bugs or wind in my eyes! And it's quite cool and keeps the heat out. Awesomeness!!!

Thank god for Mopeds!

So a couple of weeks ago my car battery died before Easter weekend. It was a bad fuel cell and luckily for me my father was kind enough to lend me his credit card. So after hauling a 50lb battery across town I thought that was it for my super nice 2000 Honda Accord. I was wrong. This morning I woke up to find my front driver's side tire was flat. I was dumbstruck, what luck! Again thanks to my father's superior knowledge of how the world works I was able to contact AAA and have them put on the spare. So now I'm on the lookout for a tire place that can patch a hole. I am still able to make it to work and school thanks to my mopeds, so for all those non believers, it's time to buy one. I currently have 3 running mopeds, so I can mix it up a little during the week. Thank god for Mopeds!
